Real-time data, built for
for regulated organisations

Something happens: a payment, a meter reading, a patient record update. The systems that depend on it need to know now, not in tonight’s batch. Axual is the platform those events move through, making each one available to every team, process and application that needs it, instantly and securely.

But real-time data is only useful if you’re allowed to use it. A bank under DORA, a grid operator running critical national infrastructure, a health network moving patient records: each has rules about where data sits, who can reach it, and who has to be able to prove it afterwards. Most streaming platforms treat those rules as an edge case. We built for them from the start.

Axual runs fully on-premises, in your own cloud, or as a managed service in the EU. It’s built on open source, so you’re never locked in to us. Governance and audit are part of the platform itself, so the proof is already there when a regulator or auditor asks for it.

From a team in Utrecht to powering critical infrastructure across Europe

Axual has always had one goal: to empower companies to simplify their data streaming while maintaining sovereignty and control over their data and infrastructure.

“In 2015, Rabobank set out to become a real-time bank. It built on Kafka, but needed more around it: governance, access control, and a way for hundreds of teams to work without waiting on a central team. We built that layer, and it remains what we do best. Today it supports banking, the electricity grid, postal services, and national healthcare across Europe. The scale changed. The problem didn't.”

Axual's company values

Drive to improve

We ship, then we look at what we got wrong. The platform gets better in releases, not in announcements.

Be curious

Kafka moves, and so does the regulation around it. Staying useful to our customers means keeping up with both.

Take ownership

Whoever picks something up owns the outcome, not just the task. Our customers run critical systems on this platform and that only works if accountability is clear.

Axual's leadership team and engineers

We’re dedicated to hiring diverse talent and ensuring that you are treated with respect and supported throughout the interview process. We embrace diversity and strive to create conditions that provide everyone with an equal opportunity to thrive.

"Data governance is critical at Rabobank. With Axual, we are able to see who has permission, who owns the data, or if the owner has given permission, and what the structure of the messages are."

Vincent Oostindle

“We were at a crossroads, with legacy technology preventing a solid digital transformation, and an ambitious strategy for customer centricity underlining requirements for becoming data-driven. We really needed the Axual platform to allow us to make the leap.”

Frequently asked questions

Where is Axual based?

Utrecht, the Netherlands. Our headquarters, our staff, and our own systems are in the EU.

What is Axual?

Axual is a European enterprise data streaming platform built on Apache Kafka. Axual adds the governance, access control, and self-service layer that Kafka does not provide on its own, so hundreds of teams can use streaming data without a central team provisioning every topic. Axual runs on-premises, in your own cloud, or as a managed service.

Who uses Axual?

Axual is used by Rabobank, Eneco, TenneT, Stedin, PostNL, PTSB, ASN Bank, Logius, and Norsk Helsenett, among others. Between them they cover retail banking, energy supply, electricity grid operations, postal logistics, government services, and national healthcare infrastructure.

Is Axual open source?

Axual is a commercial platform built on open source components including Apache Kafka, Strimzi, and Apicurio. Axual does not use a proprietary protocol or storage format, so your data and your applications can move off the platform. Axual also maintains KSML, an open source tool for defining Kafka Streams applications in YAML.

Who founded Axual and when?

Axual was founded in 2015 in Utrecht, the Netherlands, by Jeroen van Disseldorp, who is still the company's CTO. Axual remains headquartered in Utrecht and is an independent company.

How big is the support team?

Our team consists of experienced engineers with hands-on experience implementing, migrating, and operating Kafka and Strimzi platforms across regulated and public sector organizations like financial services and energy. The same team that helps you implement can carry through to ongoing support, so you're not re-explaining your setup to someone new.

Is Axual ISO 27001 certified?

Yes. Axual is ISO 27001 certified, the international standard for information security management. Axual's customers work in regulated sectors including banking, energy, and healthcare, and are audited on their suppliers as well as themselves, so certification is a procurement requirement rather than a badge.

How big is the Axual team?
