An enterprise data streaming platform

Axual is an enterprise data streaming platform built on Apache Kafka and Strimzi. It adds self-service, access control, schema governance and audit history on top of the open Kafka core, and runs on your own Kubernetes, on-premises or in your cloud. Here’s why regulated organisations choose it.

Sovereignty by architecture, not by region

A European region doesn’t make a service sovereign when the supplier, the cloud provider and the legal control sit outside Europe. With Axual, you choose: run it on your own infrastructure, with your keys and your upgrade schedule, or let Axual run it for you on a European cloud provider. Either way, the supplier, the cloud and your data stay in Europe.

Runs in your data centre or your cloud account, in the region you choose

‍

Upgrades are Helm charts you apply on your schedule, not a vendor push

Encryption keys and storage configuration stay with you, and no data passes through Axual

Axual is built and supported in the Netherlands, keeping the supplier, support, and data within the European legal framework

Your team, on your own Kubernetes, or Axual as a managed service on a European cloud provider.

Deployment control and audit evidence support your GDPR, NIS2, DORA and NEN 7510 obligations

Axual packages Apache Kafka with the Strimzi operator

Axual is open Apache Kafka, operated by Strimzi, with governance, self-service and schema management deployed alongside it. There’s no proprietary core, so you’re never locked in to us.

Core: Apache Kafka 4 on KRaft, Strimzi-operated on Kubernetes or OpenShift
Governance: self-service control plane, Apicurio schema registry with OAuth
Integration: Axual Connect, Distributor for cross-cluster sync, REST proxy, Java, .NET and Python clients
Processing: KSML, stream processing in YAML without Java
Operations: Prometheus metrics, structured logging, distributed tracing, Terraform provider

Stop buying isolation by the cluster

The usual way to keep teams apart on Kafka is to give each one its own cluster. That works until you’re running and paying for dozens of them, most barely used. Axual gives every team its own space on a shared platform.

Separate ownership: each team owns its applications, topics and schemas
No collisions: topic, consumer group and transactional ID names are namespaced per team
Separate environments: development, test and production stay apart for every team
New team, no new cluster: adding a team is a self-service registration, not a cluster to size, secure and run

Self-service, without losing control

Application teams handle their own Kafka work without waiting on the platform team. Every action happens inside guardrails the platform team sets, with access approved by the data owner and every change on record.

What teams do themselves:

Register applications and create topics per environment
Register and evolve schemas, with compatibility checks before production
Promote applications from development to production
Deploy connectors and monitor metrics and consumer lag

What stays under control:

Every topic access request approved by the data owner
Authenticated access only: mutual TLS, SASL or OAuth, with enterprise SSO
Role-based access with team ownership, and secrets held in HashiCorp Vault
Full audit trail across platform resources, and ISO 27001 certification
Axual running on European cloud infrastructure under customer control

Run it where your data needs to be

Axual runs the same way on-premises, in your cloud account or across both, on Kubernetes or OpenShift.

Axual’s sovereign cloud offers managed convenience while keeping data, operations, and support under European jurisdiction.

Grow Kafka adoption, not the platform team

Kafka is easy to deploy; scale is what costs. Every extra cluster adds patching, monitoring, upgrades and on-call work. With Axual, adoption grows without the operational load growing with it.

One platform to run: fewer clusters to patch, monitor and upgrade
Automate everything: every action in the interface is also available through the API and Terraform
Build faster: KSML lets teams define stream processing in YAML instead of writing Java
Hand off operations if you want: Axual Platform Support runs Kafka for you, so your team can focus on building

"Data governance is critical at Rabobank. With Axual, we are able to see who has permission, who owns the data, or if the owner has given permission, and what the structure of the messages are."

“We were at a crossroads, with legacy technology preventing a solid digital transformation, and an ambitious strategy for customer centricity underlining requirements for becoming data-driven. We really needed the Axual platform to allow us to make the leap.”

Frequently asked questions

How is Axual different than Confluent?

Axual is open Apache Kafka, operated by Strimzi, with governance, self-service and multi-tenancy deployed alongside it. There’s no proprietary core, and it runs on your own infrastructure rather than in a vendor’s cloud. If you ever leave, you keep a standard Kafka cluster. Axual is an independent company, built and supported in the Netherlands, so your supplier, support and data stay within the European legal framework.

How is Axual different than Amazon MSK?

MSK gives you managed Kafka clusters on AWS; governance, self-service and team isolation are things you build yourself. Axual adds those on top of open Kafka, and runs in any cloud account or on-premises, so you’re not tied to one provider.

Can we migrate from Confluent or MSK, and how long does it take?

Yes. Axual’s migration service moves topics, schemas, consumer offsets and applications from Confluent or MSK to open Kafka. Migration can run without any downtime. Check our Migration services here.

Is Axual an alternative to Confluent?

Yes. Axual is an enterprise Kafka platform built on open Apache Kafka and Strimzi, with governance, self-service and multi-tenancy included. Unlike Confluent, there’s no proprietary core: Axual runs on infrastructure you control, and if you leave, you keep a standard Kafka cluster. Axual is an independent company, developed and supported in the Netherlands where as Confluent is owned by IBM (US).

Is Axual a managed service?

Yes. You can run Axual yourself, on-premises or in your own cloud account, or have Axual run it as a managed service on a European cloud provider. Axual Platform Support can also operate a self-hosted installation for you.

How does Axual support DORA, NIS2 and GDPR compliance?

Through deployment control and evidence: you choose where the platform and data run, every access request is approved by the data owner, and audit events across platform resources show who did what and when. Axual is ISO 27001 certified.

Do teams need their own Kafka cluster?

No. Axual is multi-tenant, so teams share a governed cluster instead of getting one each. Application teams register applications, create topics, request access, manage schemas and deploy connectors through self-service, all available through the API and the Terraform provider as well as the interface. Platform teams set guardrails rather than handling each request.

Is Axual only for regulated industries?

No. It’s built for the requirements of regulated organisations, which makes it a strong fit anywhere many teams share Kafka and need control over access and data, including retail, manufacturing and logistics.

‍

What does multi-tenancy mean in Axual, and how does it lower cost?

Multi-tenancy means many teams and applications share the same governed Kafka clusters instead of each getting their own. Separation is done through ownership, access control and environments rather than through separate infrastructure: resources are owned by a group, access to a topic is granted per application and environment and needs data owner approval, and topic, consumer group and transactional ID names are namespaced so teams cannot collide. Cost follows the data you actually stream rather than the number of teams, and adding a team is a self-service registration rather than a new cluster to size, secure and run.
