The Kafka platform for public infrastructure

Real-time citizen services, cross-agency data exchange, and complete auditability on infrastructure that never leaves your borders. On-premises, hybrid, or cloud.

Message delivery to citizens

Citizens expect instant. Systems move in batches

Public organisations rely on separate systems, point-to-point integrations, and batch processing. Citizens expect instant confirmation, field teams need current data, and auditors need a clear access trail.

Four problems,
‍one streaming layer

Cross-agency data exchange

Publish events once and let authorised agencies subscribe. Platform-level access controls replace point-to-point integrations.

Regulatory compliance

Record and filter every resource change, access request, and approval for audit evidence.

Real-time citizen services

Deliver status updates and case progress in real time. Logius reduced overnight batch processing to seconds.

Emergency response

Share sensor, dispatch, and field data across response services, with sub-second delivery and multi-cluster failover.

Add event streaming without replacing legacy systems

Axual connects registries, document systems, case management, citizen portals, and modern applications. Data moves bidirectionally across datacenters and environments, all managed from one interface.

Kafka Connect connectors for databases, file systems, message queues, and REST endpoints, managed and monitored in Self-Service
Axual Distributor: bidirectional replication of messages, schemas, and consumer offsets across clusters and datacenters
Multi-cluster synchronisation for hybrid and multi-site deployments
Consumer-offset reset to a chosen timestamp for controlled replay and recovery
Kubernetes-native: OpenShift, on-premises, or private cloud, deployed with Helm and managed with Terraform
Topics, applications, schemas, and connectors in one interface

Track access requests, approvals, and changes

Access, schemas, and data flows are controlled centrally and logged automatically. An application without valid credentials cannot connect, regardless of network access.

Controls

Authentication: mTLS, SASL, and OAuth across all data plane components, including the Apicurio schema registry in 2026.1
Authorisation: role-based access control at platform and Kafka broker level, with ownership groups and approval workflows
Identity: Keycloak, integrated with your existing SSO and identity providers, with dedicated realms per tenant
Schema validation enforced on every event, with full version history for controlled evolution
Audit history: every configuration and governance action across topics, applications, schemas, groups, environments, clusters, tenants, and users, filterable by resource, actor, action, and time range
Multi-tenant isolation: shared installation, tenant, instance, environment, cluster, with separation enforced at each level
Overview Graph showing every producer and consumer per topic
Data masking on Topic Browse, so operators can inspect message flow without seeing citizen data

Data sovereignty:

The full platform runs on your infrastructure, in your datacenters, under your operational control. Logius runs it entirely within Dutch government datacenters on Logius-managed Kubernetes.

Frequently asked questions

Can Axual keep citizen data within national borders?

Yes. The Axual Platform can run entirely in your own data centres on Kubernetes or OpenShift. Your data is not routed through Axual infrastructure. Logius runs Axual inside Dutch government data centres on infrastructure it manages.

Is the Axual Platform open source?

Axual is built on open-source technologies, including Apache Kafka, Strimzi, Kubernetes, Apicurio, and Keycloak. Axual adds governance, self-service, security, and operational capabilities. Applications use standard Kafka topics and clients, reducing vendor lock-in.

How does Axual support NIS2 compliance?

Axual provides access controls, monitoring, and filterable audit records that support NIS2 requirements for access management, logging, and incident detection. Axual provides the technical controls and evidence, while your organisation remains responsible for its policies and compliance processes.

How can public organisations share data securely between agencies?

Axual gives each organisation its own tenant, resources, and identity realm on shared or separate infrastructure. Agencies grant access to specific Kafka topics, with requests and approvals recorded in the audit history. Access can also be withdrawn.

What does the Axual audit history record?

The audit history records configuration and governance actions, including resource creation, modification and deletion, access requests, approvals, and application restarts. It covers nine resource types but does not record individual Kafka messages produced or consumed. Access is restricted to Tenant Admins, and operators must enable the feature.

Is Axual a European supplier for public sector procurement?

Yes. Axual is a Dutch company, and the Axual Platform is developed in the Netherlands. Eligibility for a specific procurement process depends on its framework and accreditation requirements.

How much does the Axual Platform cost?

Axual Platform pricing depends on the deployment model, support level, and scale of the environment. Contact Axual for a quote based on your requirements.
